Meet J.W. Metz

Howdy! Im J.W.

Hello, I'm J.W. Metz, and it's a pleasure to meet you! As a native of Omaha, NE, a graduate of Bellevue University, an Eagle Scout, and an avid lover of the outdoors, I have always been passionate about nature. Initially, I pursued education and a career in forestry and environmental science, but life took a different turn, leading me to build a successful career in recruiting.

Despite this shift, my love for the outdoors remained strong, which inspired me to start J.W. Metz Co. This venture allows me to apply the knowledge I've gained from many family projects, Boy Scouts, and internships in lawn, garden, and land management.

J.W. Metz Co isn't here to only provide end-to-end landscape services. Instead, we focus on handling the difficult and less enjoyable parts of your yard and garden projects, allowing you to dive straight into the planning and planting (unless you want us to).  We fit where you need us to fit, making us your flexible yard and garden partner!

If the material required for your project are significant (over $500), we do require payment for materials up front.  Any other payment for services will be collected after our services are completed.  We invoice using Quickbooks, and accept payment through the link provided using Paypal, Credit OR Debit card.  If you would rather pay through different means, we also accept Venmo, Cash and Check.  Your receipt for services will be sent after the payment clears the bank.

We use power equipment like mini skid steers, augers, and trenchers to complete projects safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. While it might seem like a shovel or wheelbarrow could do the job, power tools help us move materials, dig, or prep areas in a fraction of the time—with better results and less physical strain.

As for cost—using power equipment doesn’t necessarily mean you’re paying more. In many cases, it actually helps control labor costs by reducing how long the job takes. Instead of paying for extra hours of manual labor, you’re benefiting from faster, more precise work using the right tools for the job.

In short: we use equipment to give you better value, better results, and a safer process.

Landscaping requires equipment—whether it’s a hedge trimmer, a wheelbarrow, or a skid steer—and with every project, that equipment experiences wear and tear.

Certain tasks, like working around rock, roots, or tight spaces, can be especially tough on tools and machines. To keep things running safely and effectively, we include a general equipment usage and wear allowance in our service pricing.

This helps us maintain our tools in top condition so we can continue to deliver reliable, high-quality work on every job.

In most cases, we’ll handle purchasing the materials needed for your project—whether it's plants, soil, mulch, or other supplies. This helps us ensure we’re getting the right products in the right quantities from trusted suppliers, and it saves you the hassle of sourcing everything yourself.

Because this is part of the service we provide—and takes time and coordination—we do apply a material handling fee to cover sourcing and delivery.

At J.W. Metz Co., we specialize in handling trees under 15 feet to ensure safety for your property and our crew.

For larger trees, we typically refer you to a licensed arborist—unless the tree is already down. In those cases, we’re happy to step in and take care of the cleanup.

This approach allows us to stay focused on delivering reliable, top-quality yard and garden services tailored to your property.

Hiring someone off Facebook or Nextdoor vs a known Business can be a gamble—you often don’t know their skill level, whether they’re insured, or how reliable they’ll be. Safety can also be a concern, especially if they’re not using proper equipment or don’t stand behind their work.

Whether you choose J.W. Metz Co. or another provider, we just want to make sure you’re working with someone you can trust.

Yes and no. We offer free consultations to talk through your specific needs and provide a quote for our services.

For basic projects, you can often send us a photo through our online form, and we’ll get back to you with an estimate by email.

For larger or more involved projects, we’ll need to visit the site to get a better understanding of the space and details.

If you’re looking for design services, we do charge for the time it takes to create a thoughtful, tailored plan.
